    Outreach Hackathon

The SMARTHEP Outreach Hackathon took place in early June in both Manchester and Geneva. In Manchester, the ESRs took part in the Conference on AI and Data Science where Carlos Cocha presented a poster on SMARTHEP and its ML developments. The team also made connections with contacts from the Robotics group at the University who need real-time data processing and haven’t considered hybrid architectures. There was also a public talk by a guest researcher from CNRS (based at Clermont-Auvergne) including a panel where the ESRs answered questions by students studying physics and astronomy. There were also discussions on anomaly detection and explainable AI with computer science colleagues. The group then participated in events to mark the University of Manchester’s bicentenary by leading outreach events including “Particle physics for toddlers” where around 50 people attended.

August 2023 - C++ Course at the University of Manchester

In August 2023, the University of Manchester hosted the eighth iteration of a C++ course for the high energy physics community organised in collaboration between the Software Institute for Data Intensive Sciences, the Training Working Group of the HEP Software Foundation, and the STFC-funded Swift-HEP project.

The course was held in person with a Zoom broadcast. In the morning, lectures were given by Sebastien Ponce (CERN), and in the afternoon we had hands-on training supported by the lecturers and by local/international mentors, including the SMARTHEP coordinator and one of the ESRs. The course also hosted Eli Chadwick from the Software Sustainability Institute at Manchester (https://www.software.ac.uk) and Software Carpentries, on how to develop FAIR and sustainable software.

The course programme and material (lectures, GitHub repository and videos) can be found at this link.

June 2023 - Visit to CERN

In July 2023, SMARTHEP co-ordinator, Prof Caterina Doglioni, together with the new Project Manager, Andrew Carey, visited CERN to meet collaborators and ESRs. It was also an opportunity for Andrew to have a tour around the facilities at CERN and see first-hand the work the ESRs are doing there.

January 2023 - Mid-term check with the Project Officer and SMARTHEP School One (Geneva, Switzerland)

The SMARTHEP mid-term check with the Project Officer took place at CERN in Geneva in January 2023. The ESRs gave presentations about their work so far to the Project Officer, and had a Q&A and advice session with the PO. The ESRs also followed a lecture on ML ethics by the SMARTHEP ethics officer, Savannah Thais (Data Science Institute of Columbia University). Sofia Cella, one of the ESRs who is trained as a CERN guide, took the ESRs to visit the ATLAS experiment.

The agenda and material for the mid-term check, including the ESR presentations, can be found at this link.

The first SMARTHEP school on Collider Physics and Machine Learning took place after the mid-term check at the University of Geneva in January 2023. The ESRs learned about experimental collider physics from Prof. Anna Sfyrla (UniGe), the theoretical physics lectures were given by Prof. Torbjorn Sjöstrand (Lund) and the machine learning lectures were given by Dr. Maurizio Pierini (CMS). The school also hosted a seminar on real-time data analysis in multimessenger astronomy, given by Prof. Teresa Montaruli (UniGe).

All material and course programme for this school can be found at this link.

    2022

November 2022 - SMARTHEP Annual Meeting 2022 (Manchester, UK)

The full network kick-off took place in November 2022 with the ESRs and PIs of the network. 35 SMARTHEP participants came to the University of Manchester for a week of presentations, social events, discussions, and the first full Network Assembly.

Some highlights of the kick-off at the University of Manchester meeting have been:

    • Introductions of the ESRs and supervisors with short presentations
    • The first full Network Assembly
    • Social dinner at an Indian restaurant (popular cuisine in Manchester)
    • A local networking session, where we invited researchers in physics, industry and society from the Greater Manchester and Liverpool area to give a talk and mingle with the ESRs.
    • A “Meet the ESRs” session for local final-year undergraduates to understand what MSCA Doctoral Networks are and how to apply, organised in collaboration with the University of Manchester Physics Society.
    • A discussion of the SMARTHEP Code Of Conduct and the European Code of Researchers with input from the Diversity and Inclusion officer (Mikko Voutilainen) and CERN HR (Ingrid Haug)
    • A visit to the Jodrell Bank site and the Lowell telescope, with introduction on how real-time analysis is used in radio astronomy by the local guide
    • A scientific writing course by Scriptoria, where the ESRs learned how to write a scientific report in preparation for writing state-of-the-art whitepapers for triggers, machine learning and hybrid computing architectures.

The SMARTHEP kick-off and annual meeting 2022 programme and material can be found at this link.
